Recent Field Trips

First, I want to thank the parents and volunteers that drove, and joined us on our recent field trips. We had  not only a good time on each trip, but we also had some great learning opportunities.

At Oak Hammock we also lucked out with fabulous weather.  We spotted lots of living creatures including a vulture, pelicans, toads, gophers, and many other birds.

At the Museum the students were able to demonstrate their knowledge of Nunavut, and learn even more about life in the Arctic. Even the parents tried out the Inuit games.

End of Year Clean up/Book Returns
Please double check your cars, home etc for books that belong to the school.  All  reading group books, story books and chapter books should be returned before the summer.
Students will begin taking things home this week.  Anything in the lockers can go home as well.  Please check the lost and found tables in the hallway when you have a chance.

Sports Day
The theme for Sports Day is Beach Party (there will be water games).  Please ensure that your child has sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses) for the day.  They will also require a change of clothes.  We will spend the morning doing Sports Day activities, and the afternoon watching a school wide movie.

End of Year Celebration
The students have many great ideas for wrapping up the school year.  Some of the ideas are: a show-and-tell party, a reading party, games party, food party.  We will make a plan this week and I will let you know what we decide.

Upcoming Field Trips

What an exciting week! We had a beautiful night for Evening of the Arts. The Read-a-Thon and book fair were very successful. It sure is wonderful to be part of such a great community during events like these.

The students have been working on story writing with an app called Story Creator. Take a look.

It's June

I hope that you had a fabulous weekend. The next four weeks are going to be full of excitement!  If your family is planning to be away and missing school during this month it would be appreciated if you gave me as much notice as possible. Thank you.

The students have been very engaged and interested in our unit study of Nunavut. Here is a video we created. It is a silent art gallery returning work in the style of Ted Harrison.

To wrap up our unit we are going to the museum to see actual artifacts and learn about Inuit life. This trip is in the afternoon on Thursday, June 11. I look forward to having some of you join us.

We have a second field trip planned for June 15.  This will be an all day trip to Oak Hammock Marsh to take in a variety of animal workshops.  A permission form will go home Tuesday this week.

As we are nearing the end of the year it is a good time to have your child check at home for books and materials that need to be returned to the classroom. I have loaned out many books from my personal collection and would like to have them in the classroom for upcoming years.

This week Wednesday is Evening of the Arts. Students are asked to be at school by 6:00 pm. Grade 2s will meet in our classroom with their violins. Grade 3s will meet in Ms. Whitney's classroom with their violins. Students will sit with their class for the entire performance. Please remember your chairs and blankets. The Scholastic book fair will be open before and after the performance. The Read-a-Thon winners will be posted that night as well.

Boston Pizza/Booster Juice orders due Monday, June 8.
Field Trip - June 11 afternoon
Field Trip - June 15 all day
No School on Friday, June 19.

Have a Great Week!

Last Week of May

This past week the Grade 2 students each completed a mini graphing project. They chose a topic, created a question with appropriate options and then collected data. They created a graph with a title, labels and the data. Take a closer look.

Our study of Nunavut is going very well. We are working on putting all of the new vocabulary we have learned into a word bank book. Some students have even taken the challenge to put the words into alphabetical order. When unsure of a word we used the iPads to look them up.

This week:

Friday: read-a-thon packages are due

Parent Appreciation

I hope that this blog post finds you well rested after a fabulous long weekend.

This week will be an exciting week! On Wednesday we are celebrating Parent Appreciation at our school. The students, and teachers, have all prepared various treats and surprises for you to enjoy. If you are able to attend chapel on Wednesday we have a special presentation prepared for you. If not, we will post the video on the blog for you to enjoy.

Watch for our Nunavut art going up in the hallway this week. We have learned so much about life in the north of Canada.

This week Grade 2s will finish their graphing projects. They have worked hard to create questions, collect data and present their findings.

The Grade 3s are beginning a short unit on Geometry. They are bringing home their fraction tests today for their parents to see.

There will be a spelling test this week, even though it is a short week. Everyone received their new word sort on Thursday.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns. Have a fantastic week!
