Conferences

Please sign up for a conference on the office bulletin board.  This year we will be having multiple students show their portfolios to their parents at one time.  I will be present to answer any questions that you have and touch base about things happening in the classroom.  The students are looking forward to sharing their work with you!  Please return the signed report card envelope this week.

Literacy Centres

This week students will begin spending their language block in centres.  They have been prepared for these activities over the past couple of months.  Having them rotate through the activities helps them to build their team work skills.  It also allows me to spend more time with the students one-on-one.  While students are in their centres I take the time to meet with them individually to review their reading and writing.

Sight Words

Grade 1 students will receive word rings this week.  The words on the ring are sight words.  They typically do not follow proper phonetic rules.  These are words that the students will need to memorize.  First practice reading them.  Have the student identify the word by simply looking at it.  Once they have mastered that you can ask them to spell the words.  This usually takes longer to master.  Please keep the word ring in a safe place, we will add words to it throughout the year.

Winter Weather

Thank you for sending appropriate winter clothing for recess.  Recess is so much fun when everyone is dressed for it.  It is helpful to have extra dry socks and mitts in your child’s locker or backpack during the winter months.

Lord, open my mind so I can learn new things about you.

{remove innards}
Remove the things in my life that don’t please you.
Forgive the wrong things I do and help me to forgive others.

{cut open eyes}
Open my eyes to see the beauty you’ve made in the world around me.

{cut out nose}
I’m sorry for the times I’ve turned my nose at the good food you provide.

{cut out mouth}
Let everything I say please You.

{light the candle}
Lord, help me show your light to others through the things I do. Amen

First Week of School

We have only spent a few days together and already we have learned so much.  We have spent time getting to know each other as well as the classroom and school routines.  It is definitely going to be a great year!

A few things you need to know about:

Star Student     Next week’s Star Student is Josh!

Shoes – students need to have indoor running shoes (and socks) that they can put on by themselves.  They also need outdoor shoes that are appropriate for playing on the structure and running.  It is a good idea to keep an extra pair of socks in their backpack.

Snack – Students are given time in the morning to have a snack.  Please ensure they know which part of their lunch is snack, and which part is lunch.

Lunch – A microwave is available to heat food, not to cook food.  Please send microwave items with a container that can be placed in the microwave.

Home Visits – if you have not yet had a home visit and would like to arrange one please let me know.  I would be more than happy to come by after school sometime.

Weekly Page – Each week you will find a page just like this one in the folder.  This page will also be emailed to you if I have your current email address.

Agenda - Students will write down reminders and homework each day.  They will receive a behaviour sticker if they had a good day.  If there is no sticker you will find a short note from me.  Please sign the agenda each day.  Feel free to add messages as needed.

Reading Records – Students are asked to read at least five days of the week to earn a reading sticker on the class chart.  Students will be bringing home a book at their reading level in their folder.  When they have read it they will return it and exchange it for a new one.  New reading records will be sent home each week.

Class Parties – During the year we will have parties for Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, and the end of the year.  Parents will be able to bring in food for those events.

Birthdays – We will celebrate birthdays in our classroom.  Students are welcome to bring a treat to share with the class.  Treats should be easy to distribute (i.e. rice krispies, cookies, cupcakes).  Please do not send cakes.
This Month: Sept. 9 Andrew; Sept. 12 Miss Ostryk; Sept. 15 Reece; Sept. 20 Katelyn

Allergies – Our school is nut free.  Our classroom has peanut, fish, seafood and milk allergies.  Please do not send any nuts at all.  When preparing birthday or party treats please take all of the above allergies into consideration so that all students can participate.  Thank you!

Happy Easter!

Country Week

This week students will work through a number of stations to learn about Ethiopia.  Ethiopia was chosen as our country this year because our sponsor child, Rehimet, is from there, as well as some of our own students.  Students will learn about the geography, food, games, art, music and culture of Ethiopia as they travel from one classroom to another.
