Dear Grade 1/2 Parents,

Year End Party The only item left to sign up for is Ice Cream toppings (chocolate sauce, candies, chocolate chips etc.). I would also love to have some volunteers help out with the ice cream and snacks during the afternoon on June 29.

Books - I have asked all students to check their homes, lockers and desks for books that belong to the school, to me, or to Mrs. Petkau. If you could help them check at home and return all books it would be greatly appreciated. There are a lot of books missing from the classroom right now and I would love for next year’s students to have the opportunity to read them all as well. Thank you!

Summer Practice

Dear Parents!

A lot of you have asked me for suggestions for summer work.  Not only that, most of the requests are for apps and websites.  This is so exciting to me!  I have already been working on my technology plan for next year as a result.

I just stumbled across a website where a teacher has linked up several popular educational websites.  This would be a good place for you to start.  She has math sites, reading sites, writing sites, and many more.  Check it out!

http://www.kbkonnectedkids.com/#!home/mainPage

The site is also on the side bar as Extra Summer Practice Sites

I was also excited to hear that many of you signed up for the free e-reader site I sent out last week.  Some of the kids are very excited about it!

Don't hesitate to forward me other awesome items that you come across.

Year End Party – On June 28th I’d like to show a video to the class. They voted on “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”. I do not have a copy of the video though…so if anyone is willing to lend it to us for the day please let me know. Please and Thank you.

Summer Reading
According to the National Summer Learning Association , it is clear that children who don’t read during the summer can lose up to three months of reading progress, and that loss has a cumulative, long-term effect.
In order to prevent the “Summer Slide” many websites have set up summer reading challenges.
· PBSKids (follow the sign: Summer Reading Adventures for a list)
· MeMeTales.com offers free books to be read on the computer or apps for your iphone/ipad, Android, Nook or Kindle Fire. All you need to do is sign up for an account.
There are many more choices available for summer reading programs. Choose something that will realistically work for you and keep your child reading all summer long!

Field Trips – Huge thanks to those of you driving on our field trips! We had such a great time learning about Life Cycles and Animal Poop at Living Prairie Museum. I hope that your child told you a little bit about it.

June 18 Mad Science Presentation
June 21 PIP BBQ @ 4:30 – RSVP online
June 27 Grad – 1pm

Science Vehicle Challenge

In Science we have been working on a Position and Motion unit.

The class was challenged to create a vehicle with 4 wheels, 2 axles, a passenger and a load.  They then had to get the vehicle safely down my ramp...

Here are the vehicles that the "judges" chose as winners:

Everyone agreed that it was more difficult to build proper wheels and axles than they first expected.

Dear Grade 1/2 Parents,

Field Trips – Huge thanks for volunteering to drive. I have more than enough volunteers for both trips. Everyone that will be driving has already been sent an information sheet home. Please check in your child’s folder if you haven’t received yours.

Aviation Museum – Remember to bring along a snack in your pocket!

June Reading – Students need to keep on reading on a daily basis to practice their reading skills. Now is a good time to set up a routine that suits your schedule, and can be maintained during the summer. I have not set up a reading incentive for June so that you can do whatever works best for you. I do however expect that students are still reading on a daily basis.

Toy Unit (Science)
In Science we are learning about materials, fasteners, position, forces, motion, and simple machines. We are almost done building our vehicles! Watch for pictures on the blog page.
