Feeling Blue?

Feeling Blue?  Our weather chart for January so far...

It's soooo cold we bundled up inside.  Grade 2 French students are learning the names for outdoor clothing.

We have also learned the names of other pieces of clothing and created paper dolls that we can dress up in all the pieces we know in french.

In Science we are working on states of matter.  Last week we mixed some solids and liquids to create playdough.  It was so much fun that the students have asked if we could have more playdough for indoor recesses.  If anyone is up to making some for a recess stash you can find the recipe we used here: PLAYDOUGH

Both Grade 2 and 3 are still exploring different ways to measure in Math.  Here are just a few pictures from class last week. (length, height, distance around, perimeter using non-standard units, cm and m)

We also spent some time learning about genres.  We cut apart the book orders to sort some of our favourite reading materials.

Recycling Poster Contest

On Thursday of next week we will be having a special concert in our school, with a focus on being Green.  Students are invited to participate in a poster contest for that event.  Students are asked to create a poster that promotes recycling by Monday, January 27.  The posters will be displayed in the school and various awards will be given out.

We have started a study of Air & Water: Solids, Liquids and Gases.  So far we have looked at the properties of these states of matter, and mixed some of them together.

Goals and Resolutions

Last week we worked on a step by step plan to make goals for the coming year.  Students were given a series of ideas and prompts to come up with several possible ideas.  After they had a list of ideas they chose one or two main goals to work on and write about.  Check them out on the front bulletin board.

Before Christmas we had worked on a Christmas around the world passport booklet.  Here are a few of the pictures from that activity.  I hope that you had a chance to look at the booklet over the Christmas break.

Thank you for sending in items for our CLWR We Care kits!  We already have a pile of materials in our classroom.  In addition to the items on the list we also require $5.00 per kit for shipping.  Whatever you are able to send in is appreciated (even $1-$2).

Our current Science unit is Water & Air: A study of Solids, Liquids and Gases.

Both grades are working on measurement in Math class. Grade 3s are currently studying time and the Grade 2s are working on measuring length with non-standard units.

Happy New Year!

January is our CLWR month!  That means that our class is responsible for collecting supplies to make We Care kits.  Below is the list of items that we need.  Any supplies that you have are appreciated for this project.  Please send in items by January 24.  We will put together as many kits as we are able during the last week of January.

3 lined notebooks
10 unsharpened pencils with erasers
1 metric ruler (30 cm)
1 pencil sharpener
1 eraser
1 pack of crayons (or pencil crayons)
1 small and simple toy (new and not requiring batteries)
1 bar of soap (new and wrapped)
1 toothbrush (new and wrapped)
1 tube of toothpaste (expiration date no earlier than one year)

This week we started a new Science Unit about Air & Water: Solids, Liquids and Gases.  There are a couple of new links on the right hand side that we explored in the Technology Lab.

We also completed an exercise in which we reflected on possible goals for the new year.  Students compiled a list of ideas and then chose one or two items to focus on.

Both Grade 2s and 3s are working on Measurement in Math class.

Happy New Year!
