Pumpkin Day

HUGE THANKS to all parents for all your help. Thank you for helping carve pumpkins! Thank you for helping me with your time! Thank you for sending in Fall supper donations and party food items. Thank you for helping your child with their homework! Everything you do is appreciated!
Spelling – Test 7 – Sight words are now being added to the list. They do not follow the phonetic ‘rules’ so they need to be practiced and memorized.
Word Ring – A word ring is being sent home with the Grade 1s (Grade 2s should still have theirs from last year). A set of sight words is already on the word ring. The best way to practice is to use the cards as flash cards until your child can say them all. Then you can practice saying the word and have them print it or say the letters out loud. They should master identifying the word and spelling the words. When doing home reading they should begin identifying those words in their reading. New words will periodically be added to the ring.
Fall Supper Theme Basket Items – A letter went home last week about themed donations for the Fall Supper. If you are sending in items for this purpose please send them directly to the classroom so that we can ensure they end up in the correct basket. Thank you!

Dear Grade 1/2 Parents,
Spelling – Test 6 – Sight words are now being added to the list.
Pumpkin Carving – Our class will be carving pumpkins on Friday, October 28. We will begin after lunch recess. I would love to have parents join us! Please let me know if you are able to help out on that day!
Halloween Party/Costumes – On Monday, October 31 we will have a Halloween celebration at school. Students may bring their costume to change into after lunch (no scary/evil costumes and no masks). I have created a sign up sheet for bringing in food items. There are 24 slots (one for everyone). The slots are spread over Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s. The list is posted outside of our classroom.

Dear Grade 1/2 Parents,

I will no longer be sending the update out in paper format.  If you require a paper copy please let me know.  Thank you!
Spelling – Test 5 will be Thursday, even though it is a short week.
Reading Homework – Students should be bringing home books to read at their level every day. There are baskets of books in the classroom that students can borrow from. When reading with your child encourage them to sound out words that can be sounded out (i.e. cat, pan, duck). When coming across sight words (i.e. come, the, was) give them the word or help them figure it out by looking at the beginning sound. You can also use the rest of the sentence to figure out what word would make sense. These words need to be learned by memory. Sight words will begin appearing on the weekly spelling test lists. A word ring with sight words will be sent home soon as well.
Fall Supper Theme Basket Items – A letter went home last week about themed donations for the Fall Supper. If you are sending in items for this purpose please send them directly to the classroom so that we can ensure they end up in the correct basket. Thank you!

Sept 26

It is now officially Fall! Last week we painted fall trees and completed a short book about the seasonal changes in Fall.
Spelling – Test 2 will be Friday
Terry Fox – A Tasks for Terry page should have come home last week. We are collecting donations for the Terry Fox Foundation this week. As students complete jobs/tasks at home they can attach coins to their page. Attach $1 and wear a hat on Wednesday. Right after chapel on Wednesday we will do the Terry Fox walk. You are welcome to join our class as we walk together.
Picture Day – Friday – Wear your best smile!
Homework – Although there is not a large amount of homework in grade 1 and 2 it is a good idea to consider the time and space available to your child for completing homework. It is important that students have a workplace that is well lit and tidy. Please consider having supplies like scissors, glue, crayons, markers and pencils available for use at home.
Please return all homework pages to school each day. Even if the pages are incomplete, they may be required during class the following day.
Many parents have been asking for homework tips and suggestions. I have sent home a copy of the proper printing formation for both lowercase and uppercase letters. This is a great reference tool for students and parents. I will try to send home homework ideas from time to time.
Class Schedule – is attached.
Forms and Money – Please submit all forms and money in a labelled and sealed baggie or envelope. This way I can easily track and organize things being handed in. Thanks for your help!
Volunteers – I am now ready to have parent volunteers help me out with various tasks. Most jobs that I could use help with are paper cutting, copying, laminating, and book organization. Two hour blocks work best for me. Please let me know a couple days in advance when you are available and I will be sure to have something ready for you.
Please feel free to contact me anytime with questions or concerns. I am here to help you and your child have a fabulous and successful year!

"I'm scribbling like I care"

First Week Update!

We have only spent a few days together and already we have learned so much. We have spent time getting to know each other as well as the classroom and school routines. It is definitely going to be a great year!
A few things you need to know about:
Star Student the schedule is being sent home today. Please make note of your scheduled date and let me know of any conflicts as soon as you can.
Shoes – students need to have indoor running shoes (and socks) for Phys. Ed. that they can put on by themselves. They also need outdoor shoes that are appropriate for playing on the structure and running. It is a good idea to keep an extra pair of socks in their backpack/locker.
Snack – Students are given 5 minutes in the morning to have a healthy snack. Please ensure they know which part of their lunch kit is the snack. It is best if the snack is easy and quick to eat without preparation/heating time.
Lunch – A microwave is available to heat food, not to cook food. Please send food in a container that can be placed in the microwave.
Water Bottles – Students may keep a water bottle in the classroom at all times. Other beverages are for snack/lunch time only.
Classroom Schedule – The classroom schedule is being finalized and will be sent home once all routines are in place.
SMARTBoard – Our classroom is having a SMARTBoard installed this week. During the first set of student-led conferences this year students will show you how they use it in the classroom.
Home Visits – if you have not yet had a home visit and would like to arrange one please let me know. I would be more than happy to come by after school sometime.
Weekly Page – Each week I will create a news page just like this one. This page will be emailed to you if I have your current email address. If you require a hard copy as well please let me know. Please check your inbox today for your first email from me. Let me know if you do not receive it.
Agenda - Students will write down reminders and homework each day. They will receive a behaviour sticker if they had a good day. If there is no sticker you will find a short note from me. Please sign the agenda each day. Your signature tells me that you have seen the agenda and completed any homework sent home the night before. Feel free to add messages as needed.
Reading Records – Students who read at least five days of the week will earn a reading sticker on the class chart. Students will bring home a book at their reading level in their folder. When they have read it they will return it and exchange it for a new one. New reading records will be sent home each week. Please record reading homework on the reading record and sign it at the end of each week.
Class Parties – During the year we will have parties for Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, and the end of the year. Parents will be able to bring in food for those events.
Birthdays – We will celebrate birthdays in our classroom. Students are welcome to bring a treat to share with the class during snack time. Treats should be easy to distribute (i.e. rice krispies, cookies, cupcakes). Please do not send cakes.
This Month: Sept. 12 Miss Ostryk; Sept. 15 Reece
Allergies – Our school is nut free. Our classroom has peanut allergies. Please do not send any nuts at all. When preparing birthday or party treats please take this into consideration so that all students can participate. Thank you!
Thank you for your help in getting this year off to a great start!
