Spring Break!

Student-Led Conferences

Thank you for coming in to do a student led conference.  If you have any further questions about the reports cards or portfolios please let me know.  Please return the report card envelopes so that we can use them again next term.  Thank you!

Manitoba Museum

Huge thanks to all the parents that drove and came along with us.  The students were able to see and touch all sorts of Inuit artifacts that we have been learning about in the classroom.  It was a fabulous way to finish off the unit!

Japan Week

Be sure to ask your child about the activites they are doing for Japan week!  Each day they are visiting a different station to learn about the culture and land in Japan.  Thursday morning we will visit the Japanese Cultural Centre, and Thursday evening there will be family orientated actvities happening at the school.  So far I have learned many interesting things and the week isn’t over!

Spring Break!

Have a fabulous and safe break with your family!  See you in April!

Student-Led Conferences
Conferences are this week!  Please sign up for a time slot as soon as you can.  The sign up sheets are on the bulletin board outside the office.  I am looking forward to meeting with each and every one of you.  Students are very excited to show you their portfolios!
Lent
All students have shown an interest in learning more about the Lenten season.  We have been discussing this preparation time for Easter together as a class.  Many students have chosen to give something up during Lent as a reminder of the sacrifice that Christ made for us.  We will work together to stick to our sacrifices during these 40 days!
Manitoba Museum
Permissions Forms for the field trip are going home today.  Please note that parents are needed to supervise groups of students.  After the presentation we will have some time to roam the museum and look through the galleries.

Shrove Tuesday

Student-Led Conferences

Lent – Shrove Tuesday - FYI

This week we are learning about Lent.  Today is Shrove Tuesday.  Below is a bit of information about this day.  I have challenged students to think of something to give up during Lent.  They do not have to participate but it will be an excellent activity to try.  We will be keeping track of our goals in the classroom.  Some students have already suggested fast food, t.v. and video games.  Giving up homework is not the best idea, even though they may think so. J
The day before the beginning of Lent is known as Shrove Tuesday. To shrive someone, in old-fashioned English (he shrives, he shrove, he has shriven OR he shrives, he shrived, he has shrived), is to hear his acknowledgment of his sins, to assure him of God's forgiveness, and to give him appropriate spiritual advice. The term survives today in ordinary usage in the expression "short shrift". To give someone short shrift is to pay very little attention to his excuses or problems. The longer expression is, "to give him short shrift and a long rope," which formerly meant to hang a criminal with a minimum of delay.
On Shrove Tuesday, many Christians make a special point of self-examination, of considering what wrongs they need to repent, and what amendments of life or areas of spiritual growth they especially need to ask God's help in dealing with. Often they consult on these matters with a spiritual counselor, or receive shrift.
Shrove Tuesday is also called Fat Tuesday (in French, Mardi=Tuesday; gras=fat, as in "pate de foie gras", which is liver paste and very fatty), because on that day a thrifty housewife uses up the fats that she has kept around (the can of bacon drippings, or whatever) for cooking, but that she will not be using during Lent. Since pancakes are a standard way of using up fat, the day is also called Pancake Tuesday. In England, and perhaps elsewhere, the day is celebrated with pancake races. The contestants run a course while holding a griddle and flipping a pancake. Points are awarded for time, for number and height of flips, and number of times the pancake turns over. There are of course penalties for dropping the pancake.

March

Spelling

This week students will work on reviewing words from past weeks.

Nut Free Policy

Please remember that our school has a No-Nut Policy in effect at all times.  This policy includes all types of nuts.  It is really important that you read all labels and ingredient lists on items coming into the school.  This policy helps to ensure the safety of all children, staff, parents and volunteers in our building.  Thank you!

Inuit

We have learned so much about the Inuit!  We have built teepees, made igloos, watched videos, designed sealskin boots, learned some Inuit words and much more! Our unit is coming to a close so we are planning to finish it with a trip to the Manitoba Museum to see the Inuit artifacts on display.  Our trip will be on March 22 in the morning.  We will need 2-3 adults to drive and supervise.  Permissions forms will be sent home soon.

Story Writing

All students have worked hard to write a storybook this term.  We are just in the publishing stages of this process.  Students are looking forward to sharing their books with you during the upcoming conferences!
