October already?

Well it's October!  We have been learning about seasonal change in Science class.  We had a real good look at some signs of fall on our field trip last week.
We saw garter snakes heading into the dens for the winter.
Yes, even I held a few snakes. (P.S. If you haven't returned your photo release form to the office yet please do so.  I'd rather post pictures of the students than myself)
We also saw a lot of Fall leaves.

I also wanted to share with you what we have been working on in Math class.  Both the grade 1s and the grade 2s are learning about Patterns.  The Grade 1s are primarily working on repeating patterns, while the Grade 2s just started working on increasing/growing patterns.

Can you figure out the rule in each of these growing patterns?

Last week we also learned about why Terry Fox is an important Canadian figure.  All students participated in the school walk.  It was a beautiful Fall day to be out for a walk.

This coming week we will debrief our field trip, learn about Thanksgiving and wrap up the pattern units.  We will also get our spelling routines back on track.  On Tuesday students will (finally) do their first spelling test.  They will come home with list #2 as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

Forms/Orders
When sending in any type of order or form (pizza/hot lunch etc.) please indicate on the form that your child is in the 1/2 Klatt room.  This will help the people sorting the forms to know which 1/2 class your child is in.  Thank you!

Language Routines

As far as I can tell the students have done a great job of informing you of their reading and spelling routines.  I just wanted to touch base though to make sure everyone is on the same page.

September Home Reading
Students are taking home books from the classroom for daily reading homework.  They trade their book when they get to school in the morning.  Every day that they complete home reading they colour an apple on the yellow September page.  The pages will be handed in at the end of the month.  If everyone submits a completed page there will be a super special September surprise!

Spelling
All students received a spelling list on Tuesday.  Students should practice the words during the week.  There will be a spelling test the following Tuesday.  The lists are pretty basic right now as we learn the routine.  I will be switching the difficulty of the lists as required.

Grade 1 words: a, an, as, am, at, and

This video is our Good-bye song.  The students really enjoy the song so I thought you may want to check it out too.

Buckets

You may have already heard your child(ren) talking about buckets.  All of BSLS is working on a common theme this year, "Have you filled a bucket today?"

You can find the story here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUgidl9wEZ0

Today students should have brought home a sheet to share with you about both filling and dipping into buckets.

The children seem to be applying the message of this book to all sorts of happenings throughout the day.  Even during French today they mentioned the buckets.  My prayer is that this theme will help students show God's love and compassion to one another.
