Butterfly Release

Our butterfly learning seemed to have gone by so quickly.  We watched small larvae turn into fat caterpillars who molted their skins a couple times.  When they shed their last skin the pupa or chrysalis was left.  This week we learned that a cocoon is only spun by a moth.  A butterfly turns into the pupa when it molts.  This week Wednesday we arrived at school to see the butterflies emerging from their pupa's.  It didn't take long at all.  Once out of the pupa they hang to dry their wings.  After that they are ready to eat and fly.  Everyone in our class had a chance to hold a butterfly before we released them.   And then...Lightning thought he'd like the beautiful aquarium.

Books - it's that time of year when we have a lot of sorting and cleaning to do.  We will begin sending things home later this week.  If you would kindly check your homes for books that are stamped with the school name or my name I'd greatly appreciate it.  If you have any educational games that I lent out to you please send those back as well.  Thank you!

Field Trip - Monday June 24th we are going to the Winnipeg Public Library on Fermor to learn about their summer reading program and sign up for library cards.  The deadline to get a library card with my assistance is Monday June 17th.  After that you will have to drop the application off at your own convenience.  Students do not need to have a library card for this trip.  If they already have a card they are welcome to bring it along and sign out books.  Please see last week's post about why reading during the summer is important, and ideas on how to keep reading all summer long.

End of Year Events

Students will participate in all of the celebratory events happening at the end of the school year.  Parents are invited to attend the grad ceremonies and the awards ceremony.  (fyi: the Grade 1/2s are not overly involved in these events and awards for their grade level are chess club and sports clubs).

For Sports Day (June 28) it is a good idea to send along a change of clothes (there will be water games), hats and sunscreen.
