Flat People
Flat People are making their return to our classroom! As requested, I have moved the bulletin board into the hallway so that everyone can see all the exciting photographs and letters. In the classroom there is also a binder full of items that we have received in the mail. Feel free to drop by to take a closer look!
Nordale Play
A student group at Nordale school has put together a play based on Snow White. We will be going to see the play on Tuesday, May 31, in the afternoon. If you haven’t already sent in the permission form please do so ASAP.
Science
Our current unit about The Growth and Changes of Living Things is proving to be an exciting unit! This week we will focus on the needs of and different types of plants. We are planting seeds so that we can watch the process happen. The bean plants will be sent home in a couple of weeks. If you choose to replant them at home you should have beans of your own to enjoy!
Reading Records
Reading homework is the most important homework assigned to Grade 1 and 2 students. Reading is a skill which must be practiced on a daily basis. The number of students handing in reading records has significantly dropped during the last month. So, for the month of June each student will be given a Reading BINGO card to complete. For each line (vertical or horizontal) completed students can earn a prize. The more lines they complete, the more reading prizes they will receive!

Students have been practicing their spelling words in the Technology Lab. The typed sheets you have found in their homework folder are the pre-test results. These are to help students know which words they need to study on the test.

MBCI Performance
Last week MBCI brought their concert band and choir to our school to do a schort concert. Our class enjoyed listening to familiar and new songs. We even won a couple prizes for our knowledge of different instruments. It was a great opportunity to see some different musical art forms.

Math
Both the grade ones and twos are working on various strategies for addition and subtraction. Grade ones are using ten frames, among other manipulatives to work out number problems. Grade twos are using a wide variety of strategies to solve double digit number problems. One of the concepts we are trying to master is using ‘tens’ and ‘ones’. Please keep this in mind when helping with math homework. If you’re looking for further tips for math homework or practice please let me know.

Scholastic
Huge thanks for supporting our Scholastic Book Program this year. The order going home today is the last order of the year. Your orders have helped stock our classroom library with new titles every month.
One of the best ways to prepare your child for school in the fall is to keep them reading all summer long. Reading is like any other skill in that it needs consistent daily practice.

Dear Grade 1/2K Parents,
Science
We are just beginning our last Science Unit for the year: Living Things. We are currently learning about the human body and needs of human beings.
Flat Stanley
The Flat People should be in their new destinations by now. If your friends/relatives have questions about the project do not hesitate to refer them to me. I can’t wait to receive them back!
Water Bottles
With the warmer weather students have been requesting frequent trips to the water fountain. Please ensure that your student has a water bottle for classroom use. Thank you!
Shoes
All students must have indoor and outdoor shoes at school. Regardless of the weather students must have socks and running shoes for Phys. Ed. class (rubber boots and sandles are not gym appropriate).

Spring Tea
It was great to see so many students from our class at the Spring Tea. Thank you for sending in items for the bake sale as well. It was an enjoyable day for everyone!
Math
Grade 1 – We are currently working on 3D and 2D shapes. Students should be familiar with the following vocabulary. You may want to look for opportunities at home to use these words: cone, cylinder, sphere, cube, rectangular prism, points, edges, faces, curved, flat, circle, square, triangle, rectangle, side, and line.
Grade 2 – We are beginning an addition/subtraction unit for numbers 1-100. Students have already learnt a variety of mental math strategies to add and subtract. Now we will really focus on working with double digit numbers.
Spelling
Please be sure to study spelling words every day. The challenge words are getting harder and many students need to practice them regularly. The list of words can be found in the homework folder each week.
